I didn’t know what to expect when I decided to visit Oak Street Health. I had been to other clinics, and assumed it would follow a similar model, but I was pleasantly surprised from the moment I walked up to the reception desk.I expected to spend most of my appointment filling out lengthy forms and searching through my calendar for dates and information. Instead, the process was smooth and efficient. I came prepared with a list of my current medications and the names of all the doctors I have seen or am currently seeing.The staff first collected my insurance information and explained what to expect during the visit. The Patient Relations Manager met with me, introduced the many resources available at the facility, and gave me a tour. She showed me the restrooms, waiting area, coffee station, and where to get water. The waiting area was thoughtfully designed with round tables and chairs, giving it a welcoming, community feel. Each table had a small basket of snacks, which I thought was a wonderful touch. I have visited high-end medical offices that offer coffee, tea, and water, but not snacks.The patient rooms were spacious, and the waiting area was intentionally modest in size, which gave me the impression that patient care is prioritized over packing in as many appointments as possible.I saw Dr. Akash Patel, who personally completed my intake. He was extremely thorough and asked thoughtful questions about my medical history and how I manage my health. It was refreshing not to have to look up information, as he was able to access records from my other doctors and specialists. He was pleasant, empathetic, and genuinely interested in understanding both me and my medical conditions.I have a physical scheduled in two weeks, and am looking forward to it. It is reassuring to know that I will be seeing a physician who truly cares about helping patients navigate life both physically and mentally.Oak Street Health is truly a patient-centered practice.
